Georgia O'Keeffe's preserved historic home is in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe acquired the Abiquiu house in 1945 and spent years restoring it. The property had been abandoned and needed substantial work, but she was drawn to its setting and its architectural character. She used the home and studio as a base for painting the surrounding landscape.
The house includes features that became closely associated with O'Keeffe, including a courtyard wall and a distinctive door. She painted the door repeatedly, turning an ordinary architectural element into a subject of concentrated visual study. The building also shows how her daily environment, not just wilderness, informed her art.
The Abiquiu home is distinct from Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and worked, and from Santa Fe, where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located. The house and studio are preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and are open to visitors through guided tours.
