In which New Mexico town did Georgia O’Keeffe spend her final years?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O’Keeffe spent her final years in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

O’Keeffe moved from Abiquiu to Santa Fe in 1984, when declining health made it difficult for her to remain at her rural home. She lived there until her death on March 6, 1986, at the age of 98. Her ashes were later scattered over Cerro Pedernal, a mountain she had painted many times.

Santa Fe had been an important center in O’Keeffe’s New Mexico life, even when she spent much of her time at Ghost Ranch and in Abiquiu. The city’s museums, galleries, adobe architecture, and surrounding landscapes connected her work with the region’s artistic culture.

Abiquiu is often given as the answer because O’Keeffe’s home and studio there are especially famous. However, Abiquiu was not her final residence. Santa Fe was where she lived during the last two years of her life and where the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum was later established.
