Georgia O'Keeffe owned a historic house in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
She purchased and restored a neglected adobe house in Abiquiú in the 1940s. The property, associated with a distinctive courtyard wall and door, became one of her principal homes and studios. It is now preserved as the Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio.
O'Keeffe had first been drawn to New Mexico during visits beginning in 1929. The region's adobe buildings, churches, mountains, and desert forms became recurring subjects. Her Abiquiú house gave her a stable base near the landscapes she painted and photographed.
Abiquiú is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and worked. Ghost Ranch is a separate place north of Abiquiú, while the historic house in this question is in the village itself. The house opened for public tours through the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum's program.
