Georgia O'Keeffe owned a famous historic home in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
She acquired the Abiquiu house in 1945 after first noticing its adobe wall during visits to the area. The property was in poor condition, and restoration took several years. O'Keeffe eventually made it one of her principal homes and studios.
The house is separate from her residence at Ghost Ranch, another nearby New Mexico location closely associated with her art. O'Keeffe also spent periods in New York and later lived in Santa Fe, but Abiquiu is the town identified with this preserved home and studio.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is now managed by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Its courtyard, adobe architecture, and surrounding landscape help explain the visual environment behind many of her later works.
