Georgia O'Keeffe maintained her later permanent home in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe discovered an abandoned hacienda in Abiquiú in the 1930s and acquired it in 1945. The house and its surrounding landscape became an important part of her daily life and artistic practice after she moved there permanently in 1949.
The property included a distinctive courtyard wall with a door, a subject O'Keeffe painted repeatedly. She also used the house as a place to organize her materials and maintain a focused, private working routine.
Abiquiú is often confused with Santa Fe because the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is in Santa Fe and the artist spent time there. Her principal New Mexico home, however, was in Abiquiú, while Ghost Ranch was another nearby place closely associated with her work.
