Georgia O'Keeffe maintained a home and studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe discovered the adobe house in Abiquiu in the 1930s and eventually purchased it in 1945 after years of trying to obtain it. The property included a distinctive wall and gate that became recurring motifs in her paintings. She restored the building and used it as a residence and working studio.
The Abiquiu house differed from her retreat at Ghost Ranch. O'Keeffe divided her time between the two New Mexico locations, using each for different aspects of her life and work. The house's architecture, courtyard, and surrounding landscape entered her visual vocabulary.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is now preserved as a historic site. It is often associated with Santa Fe because the museum devoted to her work is there, but the house itself is in Abiquiu.
