Georgia O'Keeffe maintained a home later in life in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The adobe house, acquired in 1945, became one of her most important residences and is now preserved as a historic site.
O'Keeffe had been visiting New Mexico since 1929 and was drawn to its architecture, bones, mountains, and desert light. The Abiquiu house included a famous courtyard wall and door that she painted repeatedly.
Abiquiu is often mixed up with Santa Fe, where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located. O'Keeffe lived in both the Abiquiu area and Santa Fe region, but the historic home and studio identified with her later years are in Abiquiu.
