Georgia O'Keeffe maintained a famous home in Abiquiu, New Mexico, known for its courtyard and black door. She acquired the neglected adobe property in 1945 and transformed it into a residence and studio.
The house had attracted O'Keeffe's attention years earlier, when she saw it from the road and painted the door and surrounding wall from memory. After gaining ownership, she worked with architect and builder Juan Hamilton on repairs and adaptations. The property combines traditional adobe construction with spaces suited to O'Keeffe's working life.
The Abiquiu home is distinct from O'Keeffe's house at Ghost Ranch, which lies farther north. The National Trust for Historic Preservation helped preserve the Abiquiu property, and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum manages tours and related interpretation. Its courtyard door became one of the most recognizable architectural subjects in O'Keeffe's art.
