Georgia O'Keeffe maintained her New Mexico home and studio in Abiquiú.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly for many years. In 1945, she purchased a long-abandoned adobe house in Abiquiú, a village north of Santa Fe. She restored the property and used it as a home and working studio.
The Abiquiú house became one of the places most closely associated with her mature career. Its courtyard wall and black door appear in several paintings, including works based on the visual shapes of the architecture. The surrounding high-desert landscape also supplied subjects for her paintings.
O'Keeffe additionally lived and worked at Ghost Ranch, farther north near the village of Abiquiú. These places are sometimes confused with Santa Fe or Taos, but the restored home and studio specifically stand in Abiquiú. The property is now preserved as a historic site.
