Georgia O'Keeffe lived and worked in Abiquiú for much of her later career.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly after that. In 1945, she purchased a nineteenth-century adobe house in Abiquiú, a village north of Santa Fe, and had it restored. The house became one of her principal homes and studios.
The surrounding landscape supplied recurring subjects, including adobe walls, arroyos, mountains, and a distinctive door in the courtyard. Her paintings of the area helped make northern New Mexico central to the public image of her art.
O'Keeffe also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, farther north near Abiquiú. Santa Fe was the larger nearby art center, but Abiquiú is the more specific answer when the question concerns the town where she lived and worked. Her Abiquiú house is now preserved as part of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum's historic sites.
