In which New Mexico town did Georgia O'Keeffe establish her home and studio at Abiquiu?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe established her home and studio at Abiquiu, New Mexico.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned regularly, eventually making the region central to her life and art. In 1945, she purchased an abandoned hacienda in the village of Abiquiu. The property required extensive restoration, and she moved into it in 1949.

The Abiquiu house included a distinctive black door opening onto a walled patio. That doorway became one of O'Keeffe’s most recognizable architectural subjects. She photographed and painted it repeatedly, treating a familiar structural detail as a study in shape, light, and proportion.

Abiquiu is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and worked. Ghost Ranch lies farther north and was an important landscape location, while the Abiquiu property became her permanent home and studio. The Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio is now preserved as a historic site.
