Georgia O'Keeffe spent her later years in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe moved to New Mexico in 1949, after living for many years in New York. She divided her time between Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch, finding subjects in the region's cliffs, bones, churches, roads, and vegetation. Abiquiu eventually became her principal home and studio.
The settlement lies in Rio Arriba County in northern New Mexico. Its dry light and distinctive rock formations became central to the public understanding of O'Keeffe's art, but she treated the area as a working environment rather than simply a scenic backdrop.
Santa Fe is another important place in her biography: O'Keeffe died there in 1986, and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located there. Ghost Ranch is also nearby and strongly connected with her paintings, so these three names are often confused.
