Georgia O’Keeffe owned a famous home and studio in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O’Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and repeatedly returned to paint its cliffs, desert forms, churches, and ranch landscapes. She purchased the abandoned, adobe-and-stone house in Abiquiú in 1945 and spent years restoring it.
The property became her winter home and studio. Its courtyard wall and distinctive black door appear in several paintings and photographs, making the building an important part of her visual world. The house is now preserved as a historic site associated with her life and work.
Abiquiú is often confused with Santa Fe because O’Keeffe lived and worked in both places. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is in Santa Fe, while the specific historic home and studio featured in many accounts of her working life is in Abiquiú.
