Ghost Ranch was the New Mexico location that inspired many of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings.
O'Keeffe first visited the area in 1934 and returned regularly. The ranch lies near Abiquiu amid dramatic cliffs, mesas, and desert colors. Its geological formations became recurring subjects in works such as Ranchos Church, New Mexico and Red Hills with Pedernal.
One distinctive mountain, Cerro Pedernal, appears repeatedly in O'Keeffe's art. She described it as her private mountain and famously said that she had painted it so often that it belonged to her, although the statement is usually understood as artistic rather than legal ownership.
Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu are related but not identical places. Ghost Ranch is a retreat and landscape area farther north, while Abiquiu became O'Keeffe's principal New Mexico home and studio.
