Georgia O'Keeffe restored and lived in a historic adobe house in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe discovered the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiú in the 1930s and acquired it in 1945. She restored it with architect Juan Hamilton's help and made it her primary home in New Mexico from 1949 onward. The property included a famous courtyard wall and a black door that became recurring subjects in her work.
The Abiquiú house provided a private working environment after O'Keeffe's years of dividing her time between New Mexico and New York. Its simple architectural forms became as important to her art as the surrounding landscape.
Abiquiú is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another New Mexico location closely linked with O'Keeffe. Ghost Ranch was a dramatic landscape retreat, while the Abiquiú property was her personal home and studio.
