Georgia O'Keeffe maintained her famous adobe home in Abiquiú, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe acquired the abandoned hacienda in Abiquiú in 1945 and spent years restoring it. The property included an adobe compound, a courtyard, and the distinctive door she repeatedly painted. The home became both a residence and an important working environment.
She moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, dividing her time between the Abiquiú house and Ghost Ranch. The Abiquiú property offered a more settled base, while Ghost Ranch provided dramatic open landscapes and cliffs.
The home is often confused with O'Keeffe's Ghost Ranch residence or with Santa Fe, where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located. The Abiquiú house and studio are preserved as a National Historic Landmark and are administered by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
