In which New Mexico community did Georgia O'Keeffe establish a home in 1949?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe established a home in Abiquiu, New Mexico, in 1949.

O'Keeffe had been visiting New Mexico since 1929 and was drawn to its cliffs, bones, churches, adobe buildings, and broad skies. She spent part of each year there while maintaining a base in New York, but the region increasingly became the central setting of her life and art.

The Abiquiu property included a neglected adobe house that O'Keeffe first saw in the 1930s. She later acquired it and supervised its renovation, transforming it into a practical home and studio. The house’s black door and surrounding courtyard became recurring subjects in her paintings.

Abiquiu is distinct from Santa Fe, where O'Keeffe also lived and where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is located. The Abiquiu Home and Studio is now preserved as a historic site associated with her working methods and daily life.
