Georgia O'Keeffe spent the final years of her life in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died. She had already spent years visiting the region, but the move made the Southwest the center of her personal and artistic life. She lived and worked in the Santa Fe area until her death.
She died in Santa Fe on March 6, 1986, at the age of 98. Her remains were cremated and her ashes were scattered over the Cerro Pedernal, a New Mexico landmark she had painted repeatedly.
Santa Fe is sometimes confused with Abiquiú, where O'Keeffe maintained a famous home, or with Ghost Ranch, the nearby landscape that inspired many works. These places are closely linked to her legacy, but Santa Fe was the city where she died and where the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum was later established.
