Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in November 1865.
Macmillan published the book in England in November 1865, with printing carried out by Richard Clay. Carroll received the first copy from the printer on 9 November. The book was illustrated by John Tenniel and appeared in a red cloth binding that Carroll believed would appeal to young readers.
The publication story is more complicated than a single date. About 2,000 copies had been printed earlier in 1865, but Tenniel objected to the quality of the illustrations, and Carroll asked Macmillan to stop the issue. A new printing was prepared, and the resulting edition was published in November.
A December date can cause confusion because a new edition was released for the Christmas market in December 1865, though it carried an 1866 date. The first edition is also sometimes discussed alongside the withdrawn printing and the copies later sold in the United States. Those details do not change the month associated with the first publication of the accepted edition: November.
