In which month did Pokémon Go first launch?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Go first launched in July 2016.

The augmented-reality mobile game was developed by Niantic and released for Android and iOS. It uses GPS and location data to place Pokémon, PokéStops and Gyms in the real world, turning streets, landmarks and public spaces into parts of the game map.

The rollout was staggered by country rather than occurring everywhere on one single day. That is why different players remember different launch dates, even though July 2016 is the month associated with the game’s initial release period.

Pokémon Go originally featured Pokémon from Generation I. Generation II Pokémon began arriving in February 2017, expanding the available collection beyond the creatures from the original Game Boy games.
