Kurukshetra is both a historical region and a present-day city and district in northern India. The name refers to the legendary Kuru field, where the Pandavas and Kauravas fought the great war described in the Mahabharata. The region is also called Dharmakshetra, meaning “field of duty” or “realm of righteousness.”

The Bhagavad Gita begins on this battlefield. According to the epic, Arjuna asks Krishna for guidance after seeing relatives, teachers, and friends on the opposing side. Krishna’s response becomes one of Hinduism’s most influential philosophical and devotional texts.

Modern Kurukshetra lies in Haryana, although the broader cultural and historical landscape associated with the war can include multiple nearby sites. That geographic distinction explains why some descriptions refer to a Kurukshetra region rather than one precisely bounded field. The answer is not Delhi, Punjab, or Uttar Pradesh: Haryana was formed as a separate Indian state in 1966, and Kurukshetra is one of its major religious and heritage centers.
