In which modern-day country was Christopher Columbus born?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Columbus was born in the territory of modern-day Italy, most likely in Genoa. At the time, Genoa was an independent maritime republic rather than part of a unified Italian nation, which would not be created until the 19th century.

Most historians place his birth between 25 August and 31 October 1451. His parents were Domenico Colombo, a wool worker and merchant, and Susanna Fontanarossa. Columbus grew up in the Ligurian region and probably spoke a Genoese dialect before becoming an experienced sailor.

The answer is sometimes confused because Columbus spent important parts of his adult life in Portugal and later sailed under the sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella of Castile. He also wrote and worked in several languages, including forms of Italian, Portuguese, Latin, and Spanish. Those associations do not change his birthplace. A small number of alternative theories have proposed Portuguese or Spanish origins, but Genoa in modern-day Italy remains the accepted historical answer.
