In which modern country was Genghis Khan born?

The story behind the answer

Genghis Khan was born in what is now Mongolia. Historical sources place his birthplace near Delüün Boldog on the Onon River, in the region traditionally associated with the Khentii Mountains of northeastern Mongolia.

At the time of his birth, there was no modern nation-state called Mongolia. The area was part of the Central Asian steppe, inhabited by competing Mongol, Turkic, and other nomadic groups. Temüjin was born into the Borjigin clan, one of the groups that would later become central to the formation of the Mongol Empire.

The exact location is debated. Some historians place Delüün Boldog in present-day Dadal, in Khentii Province, while others have proposed a site across the modern Russian border. His birth year is also disputed, with 1155, 1162, and 1167 appearing in historical traditions. Most historians favor 1162.

The answer is Mongolia because the question asks for the modern country, not the medieval political territory that existed when Temüjin was born.
