In which Michigan city was Domino's founded in 1960?

The story behind the answer

Domino’s was founded in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1960.

Tom Monaghan and his brother Jim took over a small pizzeria called DomiNick’s at 507 Cross Street, near Eastern Michigan University. The deal involved a $500 down payment, followed by a $900 loan to pay for the store. Jim soon left the business, trading his share to Tom for the Volkswagen Beetle they used for deliveries.

The company did not originally operate under the Domino’s name. After Tom Monaghan acquired additional stores, the original owner of DomiNick’s prevented him from using that name. An employee suggested “Domino’s,” and Monaghan adopted it in 1965.

The three-dot logo is tied to that early expansion: the dots originally represented the three stores the company had in 1965. Domino’s opened its first franchise in 1967 and later grew from its Michigan beginnings into an international delivery chain. Ypsilanti is sometimes confused with nearby Ann Arbor, where Domino’s headquarters is now located, but the company’s first store was in Ypsilanti.
