In June 2005, University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian moved to the Boston area after entering Y Combinator’s first startup batch. They worked on Reddit from an apartment in Medford, a city just northwest of Boston, while developing the site’s early software and interface.

The location is easy to confuse with Boston because Medford is part of the Greater Boston region and Reddit is often described broadly as a Boston-area startup. Cambridge and Somerville are also nearby Massachusetts cities with strong technology and university communities, but they were not the city identified in Reddit’s early timeline.

Reddit officially launched in 2005 as a simple social-news website where users submitted links and voted on them. Huffman handled much of the programming, while Ohanian focused on the business, presentation, and branding, including the original Snoo mascot. The company later moved to San Francisco after its acquisition by Condé Nast in 2006.
