McDonald’s opened its first Japanese restaurant in Tokyo in 1971.
McDonald’s Japan began operations in 1971, with its first restaurant opening in Tokyo’s Ginza district. The location placed the American fast-food brand in one of Japan’s best-known commercial areas and introduced the Golden Arches to the Japanese market.
The Japanese business was developed with local partners, especially Den Fujita, whose company helped establish and operate the chain. McDonald’s Japan combined the parent company’s service model and visual identity with products and practices suited to Japanese customers.
Tokyo is sometimes confused with Osaka because both cities became major McDonald’s markets. Tokyo, however, was the first Japanese location. The launch also illustrates a recurring feature of McDonald’s branding history: the same arches and restaurant concept could be localized while remaining immediately identifiable as one global brand.
