In which Italian city was Christopher Columbus born?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, a major maritime city in the Republic of Genoa. Most historians place his birth in 1451, although the exact date remains uncertain.

Columbus came from a Ligurian family. His father, Domenico Colombo, worked as a wool weaver and later moved the family to Savona. Columbus went to sea as a young man and developed connections with Genoese merchants before establishing himself in Portugal and later Spain.

Genoa was not part of a unified Italy during Columbus’s lifetime. It was an independent republic with a powerful commercial fleet and a long tradition of Mediterranean trade. This helps explain why Genoese identity is central to accounts of his early life.

Some writers have proposed that Columbus came from Portugal, Spain, or another part of the Italian peninsula. Those theories are known collectively as the “Columbus question,” but the scholarly consensus remains that he was Genoese. A neighbouring fact often confused with his birthplace is that he spent much of his later career in Portugal and Spain.
