In which historical period is Assassin’s Creed Unity primarily set?

The story behind the answer

Assassin’s Creed Unity is primarily set during the French Revolution.

The game begins in 1789 and follows Arno Dorian through revolutionary Paris. Major historical events and figures from the period appear alongside the fictional Assassin–Templar storyline. Paris serves as the main open-world setting, with locations such as the Bastille and the Palace of Versailles represented in the game.

The French Revolution is distinct from the Industrial Revolution, which is the historical backdrop of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate in Victorian London. It is also different from the American Revolution, the setting of Assassin’s Creed III, and the Italian Renaissance setting of Assassin’s Creed II.

Unity was released in 2014. Its title refers to the game’s cooperative multiplayer focus as well as broader themes of political upheaval and changing alliances. The game’s historical setting begins before the revolution reaches its most violent phase and continues through its major turmoil.
