In which hemisphere do all living penguin species naturally occur?

The story behind the answer

All living penguin species naturally occur in the Southern Hemisphere.

Penguins range from Antarctica northward to the Galápagos Islands, southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the southern coasts of South America. The Galápagos penguin reaches the lowest latitude, living close to the equator, but its natural range still lies south of the equator.

A common misconception is that penguins live at the North Pole because polar bears and penguins are often shown together in children’s media. Polar bears are native to the Arctic, while no wild penguin species is native to the Northern Hemisphere.

Penguins are not restricted to ice. Several species live in temperate or relatively warm coastal environments, including the African, Humboldt, Magellanic and Galápagos penguins. Their distribution is tied mainly to productive marine waters and suitable breeding land.
