In which Grimm tale is Jorinde turned into a nightingale?

The story behind the answer

In which Grimm tale is Jorinde turned into a nightingale? The answer is Jorinde and Joringel.

This German fairy tale follows two lovers who approach the castle of a dangerous witch in the forest. The witch turns Jorinde into a nightingale and immobilizes Joringel, then carries the bird away to join other enchanted maidens kept in cages. The transformation gives the tale its most memorable image and establishes the lovers’ separation.

The Brothers Grimm recorded the story as KHM 69, and it is classified as ATU 405. In the rescue sequence, Joringel dreams of a magical flower capable of breaking the witch’s spells. After searching for nine days, he finds it, returns to the castle, and uses it to defeat the witch’s magic and restore Jorinde and the other captive women.

English editions may use variants such as Jorinda and Jorindel, so the names can look different while referring to the same tale. The witch is sometimes called a fairy in translation, but the central plot remains the same: Jorinde becomes a nightingale, while Joringel must find the means to free her.
