In which Gospel does Jesus tell the parable of the Good Samaritan?

The story behind the answer

The Gospel of Luke contains Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan. Luke 10 presents the story during a conversation about the meaning of the command to love one’s neighbor.

A traveler is attacked, stripped, and left wounded on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest and a Levite pass by, but a Samaritan stops, treats the injured man’s wounds, transports him to an inn, and pays for his care. Jesus then asks which person acted as the neighbor.

The story’s force partly comes from tensions between Jews and Samaritans in the period. By making a Samaritan the compassionate figure, the parable challenges assumptions about who counts as a neighbor. The phrase “Good Samaritan” later became a general expression for someone who helps a stranger, and many legal systems use “Good Samaritan” laws for emergency aid.
