In which English village was Jane Austen born?

Jane Austen was born in the English village of Steventon, in Hampshire, on 16 December 1775. Her father, the Reverend George Austen, was the Anglican rector of Steventon and nearby Deane.

The Austen family lived at Steventon Rectory, where Jane spent the first 25 years of her life. The rectory was the intellectual and social centre of a large family: Jane grew up with six brothers and one sister, Cassandra. Her father also tutored boys at home, so the household was filled with books, conversation, and visiting pupils.

Steventon is sometimes confused with places strongly associated with Austen later in life. The family moved to Bath in 1801, and Jane lived at Chawton Cottage from 1809, where she completed or revised several major novels. Winchester was where Austen died in 1817 and was buried in the cathedral. Those places matter greatly to her biography, but Steventon is her birthplace.
