Chawton Cottage, Jane Austen’s home, is located in Hampshire, England.
The cottage stands in the village of Chawton, near Alton, in the East Hampshire district. Austen moved there in 1809 with her mother, Cassandra, and family friend Martha Lloyd, after her brother Edward provided the household with a permanent home on his estate.
Austen spent the final eight years of her life at Chawton. During that period, she revised and prepared all six of her major novels for publication, including Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma. She also worked on later pieces such as Sanditon.
The house is now Jane Austen’s House Museum, while nearby Chawton House was the larger manor associated with Edward Austen Knight. That distinction can cause confusion: Chawton Cottage was Austen’s residence, whereas Chawton House was the family’s principal manor.
