In which English city was Guy Fawkes born?

The story behind the answer

Guy Fawkes was born in York, England. He was probably born on 13 April 1570 in Stonegate, although the exact birth date is inferred from his baptism at St Michael le Belfrey on 16 April.

Fawkes grew up in York and attended St Peter’s School, where he was exposed to Catholic influences. His father died when Guy was eight, and his mother later married a Catholic. These family and educational connections helped shape the religious identity he carried into adulthood.

York is sometimes confused with London because Fawkes became associated with Westminster and the Houses of Parliament. However, London was the setting of the Gunpowder Plot and his arrest, not his birthplace. After leaving York, he travelled to continental Europe, served in Catholic Spanish forces and eventually returned to England as one of the plot’s principal participants.
