In which English city did The Beatles form in 1960?

The story behind the answer

The Beatles formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960.

The group developed from John Lennon’s skiffle group, the Quarrymen, which he founded in 1956. Paul McCartney joined in 1957, and George Harrison followed soon afterward. The name “The Beatles” was adopted in 1960, after several earlier names had been used.

Liverpool’s Cavern Club became central to the band’s early story. The Beatles performed there repeatedly before their breakthrough, helping build the local following that attracted manager Brian Epstein. Their connection with the city remains a major part of their identity, and Liverpool is closely associated with the Merseybeat music movement.

A common mix-up is placing the band’s origin in London, where they later worked with producer George Martin and achieved international fame. Their formation, however, was in Liverpool, and the city’s musical culture shaped their earliest years.
