In which English city did J.R.R. Tolkien spend much of his childhood?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien spent much of his childhood in Birmingham. After his mother returned with him and his brother from South Africa, the family lived in and around Birmingham, where Tolkien encountered both industrial streets and rural Worcestershire landscapes.

The contrast between Birmingham and nearby countryside became important to Tolkien’s imaginative geography. He later associated the area around Sarehole Mill with the rural atmosphere behind parts of the Shire. The mill, waterways, trees, and fields helped form memories that contrasted sharply with the industrial city.

Tolkien attended King Edward’s School in Birmingham, where he studied languages and became interested in historical linguistics. He later went to Oxford, but Oxford was his university city and adult academic base, not the principal setting of his childhood. This distinction is a common source of confusion in short biographies.
