The first Legoland theme park opened in Billund, Denmark, in 1968.
Billund is the home of the LEGO Group, which began there in 1932 as a woodworking business founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen. The company introduced its familiar interlocking plastic brick in the late 1950s, and the theme park was created beside the LEGO factory to attract visitors and display large-scale models.
Legoland Billund became the first of a worldwide group of LEGO-themed parks. Its attractions include miniature landscapes, rides, and structures built from LEGO bricks. The resort helped turn Billund from a small industrial town into an international family-travel destination.
Visitors sometimes assume the first Legoland was in Copenhagen because it is Denmark’s capital and largest tourist gateway. It was actually established in Billund, in central Jutland, close to the LEGO company’s original base.
