In which country was Vincent van Gogh born?

Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, in the village of Groot-Zundert in North Brabant.

He was born on 30 March 1853 as Vincent Willem van Gogh, the eldest surviving child of Theodorus van Gogh, a Dutch Reformed minister, and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Zundert was a rural community near the Belgian border, and the landscapes of his Dutch youth became part of the background to his early artistic development.

Van Gogh did not begin as the brightly colored painter associated with works such as The Starry Night. His early Dutch paintings, including The Potato Eaters, used dark earth tones and focused on rural labor and peasant life. He later worked in Belgium and France, which can cause confusion about his nationality and birthplace.

He spent much of his productive career outside the Netherlands, especially in Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise. Nevertheless, his birthplace remained Groot-Zundert, Netherlands—not Belgium, France or Germany.
