In which country was Le Corbusier born?

The story behind the answer

Le Corbusier was born in Switzerland.

He was born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris on 6 October 1887 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a city in the canton of Neuchâtel in French-speaking Switzerland. The town was a major centre of watchmaking, and its strong craft traditions helped shape the young designer’s early environment.

Although Le Corbusier became closely associated with France and acquired French nationality in 1930, Switzerland was his country of birth. He moved to Paris permanently in 1917 and built most of his international career there, which can lead to the mistaken answer of France.

His Swiss origins also explain why reliable biographies often call him Swiss-French. He retained ties to his birthplace while working across Europe and beyond. The other options are not defensible as birth countries: Germany and Italy were important cultural settings in European architecture, but neither was where Le Corbusier was born.
