In which country is the Baroque Queluz Palace located?

The Baroque Queluz Palace is located in Portugal.

Queluz Palace stands in Queluz, in the Sintra Municipality of Portugal, near Lisbon. Construction began in 1747 for Peter of Braganza, the brother of King Joseph I. Peter later became king consort as Peter III after marrying his niece, Queen Maria I.

The palace began in a Portuguese Baroque tradition but developed strongly toward Rococo, with ornate interiors, curved façades, elaborate gardens and richly decorated ceremonial spaces. Its scale and decorative ambition have led to comparisons with Versailles, although Queluz is much smaller and more intimate.

The palace later became an important royal residence. After the Ajuda royal residence was destroyed by fire in 1794, Queluz served as the official home of the Prince Regent John and his family until the Portuguese royal family left for Brazil following the French invasion in 1807. The Queen Maria I Pavilion now serves as Portugal’s official state guest house.
