In which country is the ancient rock city of Petra?
Answer
Jordan
Answer
Jordan
The ancient rock city of Petra is in Jordan.
Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, whose merchants controlled important caravan routes linking Arabia, the Levant and the Mediterranean. Many buildings were carved directly into rose-coloured sandstone cliffs.
The famous Khazneh, or Treasury, is an elaborate rock-cut façade, but it was probably a tomb rather than a treasury. Petra also contains temples, tombs, a theatre and an extensive water-management system.
The city declined after trade routes shifted and major earthquakes damaged it. Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt brought Petra to wider European attention in 1812, after which archaeological study increased.
