In which city was the United States Declaration of Independence adopted?

The story behind the answer

The United States Declaration of Independence was adopted in Philadelphia.

The Second Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House, the building now known as Independence Hall. Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776, after debating and editing Thomas Jefferson’s draft. Philadelphia was then the largest and most important political center in the colonies.

The same building had already hosted major revolutionary meetings. The First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia in 1774, and the Second Continental Congress began meeting there in 1775. Independence Hall later hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, making it central to both the Declaration and the Constitution.

Philadelphia was not the permanent national capital. Congress moved among several cities during the Revolutionary War and Confederation period. It later served as the temporary federal capital from 1790 to 1800, before the government moved to Washington, D.C.
