In which city was the United States Constitution signed in 1787?
Answer
Philadelphia
Answer
Philadelphia
The United States Constitution was signed in Philadelphia in 1787.
Delegates signed the Constitution on September 17, 1787, at the Pennsylvania State House, the building now known as Independence Hall. The Constitutional Convention had met there from May 25 through September 17 to address weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation and design a stronger federal government.
Thirty-nine delegates signed the finished document. They represented 12 states; Rhode Island did not send delegates to the convention. George Washington presided over the meeting, while James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and other delegates shaped the debates.
Philadelphia is central to America250 history because the same building hosted the Second Continental Congress when it adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Washington, D.C., did not become the national capital until later, and New York City served as the first capital under the Constitution before the government moved to Philadelphia and eventually Washington.
