In which city was the Treaty of Paris that recognized U.S. independence signed?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris recognizing United States independence was signed in Paris, France, on September 3, 1783.

The negotiations took place in the French capital after the American victory at Yorktown shifted the balance of the war. John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and Henry Laurens represented the United States during the peace discussions, while David Hartley signed for Great Britain.

The treaty’s name identifies the city where the central British-American agreement was concluded. Several related peace agreements were also negotiated in Europe, including treaties involving France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic; together, these are often called the Peace of Paris.

Paris can be confused with Versailles because separate treaties with France and Spain were signed at Versailles in 1783. The U.S.-British treaty itself was the Treaty of Paris.
