In which city was the first Tiffany & Co. store located?

The story behind the answer

In which city was the first Tiffany & Co. store located? The answer is New York City.

Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young opened their first shop in New York City in 1837. It operated at 259 Broadway in Lower Manhattan as a stationery and “fancy goods” emporium, rather than as the jewelry-focused luxury house most people recognize today. Tiffany’s father provided the founders with $1,000 in startup financing.

The young business soon broadened its merchandise. By the early 1840s, it sold items including glassware, porcelain, cutlery, clocks, and jewelry. The company later moved several times within Manhattan, including to Union Square and eventually to Fifth Avenue. Its famous flagship is now associated with Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, but that location dates from 1940—not the company’s beginning.

A common mix-up is confusing the brand’s founding city with its later international expansion or its current flagship address. New York City is the canonical answer because the original store was established there.
