The 1876 Centennial Exposition was held in Philadelphia.
Officially called the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine, the fair marked the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It opened in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park on May 10, 1876.
The exposition displayed industrial products, art, machinery, and inventions from the United States and other countries. More than 10 million visits were recorded during its run, a remarkable total for the nineteenth century. Memorial Hall was one of its best-known surviving buildings.
Philadelphia was a natural symbolic location because the Declaration had been debated and adopted there. The 1876 event is therefore a direct predecessor in spirit to America250, though the 2026 observance marks 250 years rather than 100.
