R.E.M. was formed in Athens, Georgia. The city's University of Georgia community and developing live-music scene provided the setting where Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry came together in 1980.

Stipe met Buck at Wuxtry Records, an Athens record shop where Buck worked. Through a mutual friend, they connected with Mills and Berry, who had already played together in bands while growing up in Macon, Georgia. The new quartet rehearsed locally and performed its first show at a party in a former church on April 5, 1980.

Athens was more than a birthplace on a map: it became central to R.E.M.'s identity and early audience. Venues such as the 40 Watt Club helped the group build a following alongside other Athens acts, including the B-52's and Pylon. The city later became internationally associated with the American college-rock movement, with R.E.M. as its best-known success story.
