In which city was Nando's founded in 1987?

The story behind the answer

Nando's was founded in Johannesburg in 1987.

The restaurant chain began when Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin bought a Portuguese-style chicken restaurant in Johannesburg. They named the business Nando’s after Duarte’s first name and built the menu around flame-grilled chicken and peri-peri sauce.

Peri-peri, also written piri-piri, is a chili-based sauce associated with Portuguese-African cooking. Nando’s used different heat levels to let customers choose how spicy they wanted their chicken. The concept later expanded internationally, especially in the United Kingdom, Australia, and other markets.

The company is often described as Portuguese or South African because its food combines Portuguese culinary influence with a South African origin and business history. Johannesburg, rather than Lisbon or Cape Town, is the specific city associated with the founding restaurant.
