McDonald’s first introduced the “I’m Lovin’ It” campaign in Munich, Germany.
The campaign was developed for McDonald’s by the German advertising agency Heye & Partner and first appeared in Germany in 2003. It was then adapted and rolled out across other countries, giving McDonald’s a unified global advertising idea.
This origin is sometimes overlooked because McDonald’s is headquartered in the United States and its historical advertising is often associated with Chicago-area corporate operations. The campaign, however, began as a German-market initiative before becoming an international platform.
The phrase was deliberately simple and conversational. Its flexibility helped local McDonald’s organizations use the same central identity while adapting advertisements, voices, performers, and cultural references for different audiences.
