In which city was C.S. Lewis born in 1898?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898.

He was born on 29 November 1898 at 47 Dundela Avenue in the Strandtown area of east Belfast, then part of Ireland within the United Kingdom. His full name was Clive Staples Lewis, and his parents were Albert James Lewis and Florence Augusta Hamilton Lewis.

Lewis spent his early childhood in Belfast before the family moved to England after his mother’s death. He later became closely associated with Oxford, where he studied and taught, but Oxford was not his birthplace. His childhood in Ireland remained an important part of his personal background, especially in accounts of his early love of books and imaginative worlds.

Belfast is also the birthplace of his older brother, Warren Lewis. The two brothers remained close throughout their lives and later belonged to literary and discussion circles that helped shape Lewis’s writing career.
